How to Prevent PC Virus Infections
Believe it or not, no matter how good an anti-virus software program is, it is important for you to have knowledge about how you can prevent your computer from getting attacked by viruses. Do not forget the saying that knowledge is power. Below are some of the tips that you can follow to ensure that your computer does not get a virus infection.
1. Update your anti-virus program and detection database. This is the most common reason why users get a PC virus in the first place - they do not update their programs to detect and prevent the latest viruses, spyware, trojans, and other malicious stuff out there in the internet.
2. If you find an email from someone that you do not know and there is an attachment with the email then never ever open this kind of mail. You should also not open an email if you do not know what the attachment is, even if the mail has been sent by a friend. The reason why you should do this is because of the fact that your friend may unknowingly pass on an infected virus to you through any forward mails with attachments. If you are using Windows then you should set the option to “not hide” file extension from “hide file extension”.
3. You should add your own email address and save it in you address book. This is more of an alert if your computer is infected and a malicious program starts sending spam and viruses to people in your email list then you will be alerted of this when an email is sent to you.
4. Before you run cookies and ActiveX, set them to prompt you. By doing this, you can effectively prevent your computer from being infected by viruses. When you find ActiveX in your emails then chances are that the emails contain virus.
5. Get an anti-virus program that is not just popular among people all over the world but it should also be effective in preventing viruses from attacking your PC. Make sure that the program puts out updates on a regular basis so that you will have an up-to-date anti-virus program. Some of the programs that you can consider using are Kaspersky, McAfee and Norton. Always remember that if the anti-virus program that you are using does not puts out updates on a regular basis then it is not effective in protecting your PC.
6. If there is a program that you wish to download but you are not sure whether it will be safe to download it or not, then you should not download it.
By implementing these simple tips, you can decrease your PC’s chance of getting infected.
